Do You Skip The Intros?

So I had a very Star Trek day today, watching first an episode of Picard season 3, and then bingeing on Strange New Worlds. When I binge watch a show I always skip the summary of the previous episodes and the intro–except when I am watching Star Trek. Who wouldn’t want to listen to the mesmerizing voice of a starship captain talk about space, the final frontier every 52 minutes? It is probably the most relaxing thing on an anxiety filled Saturday evening, and watching Ethan SPeck as Spock makes me happy. In all of the incarnations of the original crew, Spock was always my favorite, like Data, Odo, The Doctor and Seven were my favorites in other shows. I could relate to them, as they all had a problem understanding and experiencing human emotions like the people around them. Kind of like me at certain periods of my life.

And then there is the beautiful predictability and reliability of Star Trek, where adventures keep me engaged, but they follow a great pattern where my obsessive little mind can find the comfort of routine. It helps to know what to expect next, and I never have to get attached to any red shirts.

I was introduced to Star Trek in the form of the films featuring the TOS crew around the same time as I was introduced to Star Wars in the form of the original trilogy. While Star Trek just seemed to get better with TNG and DS9, two shows that have greatly contributed to my English vocabulary and colloquialisms (the third one was 21 Jump Street), the digitally “improved” versions and then the prequel trilogy kind of turned me off Star Wars. I mean kid falls into the volcano and survives, but his wife gets the sads and just…. dies? Really? Anyway, Enterprise started out as a disappointment, and then the gap of a several years before Discovery and Picard were needed so I could appreciate the reboot movies. I mean they had the best Chris, and one of them had that guy with the cheekbones. Then Star Wars 7 was awesome! Of course it was Star Wars 4 and 6 all over again with girl Luke, so yeah, I enjoyed the film, and Rogue One was brilliant… but everything else is just… Disney. I do like Leia being a Disney princess, because there is at least one that I like.

In addition to the abundance of Star Trek, I spend my time rewatching Stargate: Atlantis rather than watching the billion and one new Star Wars shows. Any guesses who. my absolute favorite character is in the entire Stargate franchise is? Yes, of course it’s Rodney! If you guessed Daniel Jackson, you were close.

Now that you know my dirty secret that I don’t really like Star Wars any more, and I fully identify as a Trekkie (pronouns: ő, őt), I am curious: which one is your of the three franchises?
